Surprise Posing Lesson!

During the past couple of months, the Significant Moments team has been grinding out some very special and significant work. However, that work isn’t destined to be shared on this specific platform, so instead of an update on the past couple of months, we’ll be giving a mini-lesson on posing with the significant other!

These tips will help photographers that are newer to the craft with posing partners together. It is undeniably more difficult to pose more than one person in one photograph while maintaining balance and harmony within the story of the photo.

A major key is to pay equal attention to both subjects. For instance, when posing maternity, mama-to-be is clearly the main subject of the session. However, when adding the significant other, despite the purpose of the session being maternity, you don’t want the significant other to be made less important or given less attention to detail than the mama-to-be. Having a cohesive balance of attention while interacting with and posing the couple is integral to their level of comfort, which ultimately affects the final images.

On the note of maintaining a cohesive balance; when posing couples, you always want interaction between them. Whether that means having them close together, touching each other in some way, gazing into each other’s eyes, etc., you want the bond they share to be apparent in the images you create.

A special note is to make sure you’re taking special consideration towards the men, specifically fathers/husbands. They frequently either have no experience with being photographed professionally or they have negative experience with it. Make sure they feel heard and seen (as much as they are comfortable with). Men often carry a lot of anxiety and tension into photoshoots. Making sure you are able to make them feel comfortable and a part of the experience will drastically alter their body language from stiff to relaxed, and that’s exactly what you want for creating beautiful images that make them feel a sense of awe at the comfortable and confident side of themselves you were able to bring out.

If you could use deeper instruction on posing, I have written an in-depth posing guide that educates on all things posing, including a far more profound look into posing couples. You can find it in the Store, found under the Photographers pull-down menu.
