Makayla and David are Engaged
“Being a professional photographer doesn’t mean you shoot everything…. It just means you can. ” – Craig Lamere
My cousin is getting married. I was honored that she and her fiancé David wanted me to photograph their engagement portraits, especially since I specialize in maternity and high school senior portraits mainly. But nonetheless I was excited and honored.
Although I am happy, this is a bitter sweet time for me. I remember when Makayla was born, when she first started walking, when she started school…. many of her firsts. We lived in the same home for some time, and saw each other almost every day for about a year. She has always been the most giving person I have ever known. She has always had the ability to get along with all age groups and make everyone feel comfortable. She was always my guinea pig and allowed me to make outfits for her and take pictures of her even from a VERY young age. And even though we are cousins it feels a lot more like siblings. So much so that we didn’t always get along haha! The truth is we have a very similar personality.
Now that she is engaged and has a little girl of her own, it is surreal for me. We go through life thinking that things will always be the same. That things will forever be how we want them to be. And when the realization comes that that isn’t always the case… It’s hard to get sometimes. I am a person that embraces change and even for me, seeing the person my cousin is now is strange for me. Not in a bad way.. just in a different way. It sounds so cliché but I still see the little girl that I played with, took pictures of, picked on, irritated and LOVED… still love. These changes, however are not quite as hard to take when you see happiness, and when you see the man behind the word fiancé.
David, I have only been around you a handful of times, and my judgment of character is almost always correct. I am able to exhale with peace when I know you are the one that is with Makayla. You are patient and funny and a stronghold for Makayla. I know you will take care of her. I know you will take care of Gracie. The way you take care of your son. I am proud that even though you are so young you stand up to your responsibilities and embrace them. That takes a very strong person. I am excited for the life you two will share….
OUR SESSION WAS PERFECT! Even though it seems as everything can go wrong sometimes… The most amazing things can come of it. Again because of all the rain we have had the spots we wanted to reach were about 6 ft under water. HAHA! No worries on my end, I knew it would be fabulous!
Makayla and David, THANK YOU for letting me share in this time with you. Thank you for trusting me, and knowing I would do justice even facing the random obstacles that came our way. Thank you for kicking your feet in the water when it made you feel a little stupid… I promise it was worth it! I love you both and wish you the very best. Makayla I can’t believe you are where you are. A mother, a soon to be wife… Just a beautiful grown woman. I know you will be an amazing wife. And I cannot wait to see you in your gown.
LOVE ALWAYS – KK
